Downstream Application
Tin-coated cold rolled steel sheet begins with high-quality cold rolled steel as its base material. Through either electrolytic or hot-dip coating processes, a layer of tin is applied to the steel surface. This coating provides excellent corrosion resistance while maintaining good formability and weldability.
The tin coating creates a protective barrier that prevents oxidation and rust formation. The material exhibits excellent solderability, making it particularly valuable in electronic applications. The surface finish can range from bright to matte, depending on specific processing techniques.
Tin-free steel uses a chromium-based coating instead of tin. The coating typically consists of a thin layer of metallic chromium topped with chromium oxide. This combination provides different performance characteristics compared to tin-coated steel.
The chromium coating offers excellent paint adhesion and lacquer retention properties. While it doesn't provide the same level of solderability as tin-coated steel, it demonstrates superior resistance to certain types of corrosion, particularly in acidic environments.
